Listen Your Heart Out: Music Recommendation — “GINGER”

by Alicia Dorsett

Music is one of the most important parts of my daily routine. Whether I need a quick bop for the walk to class or an entire album to get work done, I can find a song for almost every need. It’s rare, though, that you can find an album to do it all.

BROCKHAMPTON, hip-hop/rap boyband, released their fifth studio album on August 23, 2019. This 12-song album is a 44-minute musical rollercoaster.

“GINGER” begins with “No Halo,” a soft, percussive rap song. The guitar-led melody creates the perfect tone to kick-off the album.

“Sugar” is the second track on the album and begins with that same melodic guitar before jumping into a moody rhythm. “Sugar” is one of the featured songs on the album, and it’s a fan favorite. If you like chill, moody songs that make you want to dance, then this track is for you.

Track three, “Boy Bye,” is one of my favorites on the album. After the first two slower songs, the multifaceted rhythms pic -up the pace in best ways.

Of the three singles released, none of them give you a clear idea on what to expect from the album. They’re each upbeat and exactly what you might expect from a hip-hop boyband. It makes the slow jams hit even harder.

By the time “Dearly Departed” (the seventh track) comes around, you’ve already experienced the transition from chill bops to classic BROCKHAMPTON. This one brings it back to the beginning.

The next two songs take you right back to the poppy raps from earlier in the album. “I Been Born Again” and “Ginger” act as the final upbeat hurdles before the relatively calm and collected decline of the album over the following three steps.

“GINGER” has got to be one of my favorite albums of 2019. It has a song for just about everyone, and the album is definitely one of BROCKHAMPTON’s best.
