Joan T.A. Gabel was recently named the 19th chancellor for the University of Pittsburgh. She is the first woman to hold this position since the founding of the university in 1787.
Gabel is set to begin her work in July, and is currently president and chief executive of the University of Minnesota System and Twin Cities campus. Prior to this position, she served as University of South Carolina’s Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.
She graduated from Haverford College with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy. She then went on to obtain a Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School of Law.
Gabel has made many momentous achievements, leading the University of Minnesota to set record-high graduation rates and gain transformational partnerships. She has also been granted many awards for research, teaching, and service.
“I am excited and filled with optimism when I think of leading this institution into its important next chapter,” Gabel says.
