A Successful Year for Sports at Pitt-Greensburg

Pitt-Greensburg was able to find individual success, as well as conference success in the 2015-16 season.

Recently the AMCC released its Presidents Cup Standings 2015- 16, which is based on percentage of possible points won at the end of the Winter sports’ seasons. Pitt-Greensburg finished in second behind only Penn State Behrend. As a whole, our campus featured a .602 score.

“Ranking in second was a tremendous accomplishment for us,” said Anthony Berich, Director of Athletics and the Head Golf Coach at Pitt-Greensburg. “This is the highest we’ve ever finished.”

Not only was Pitt-Greensburg recognized for our success on a school-level, it was recognized for many individuals’ success.

As followed is a list of the athletes who were recognized for their achievements at their respective sports. softball, baseball, and men’s tennis are still in season; therefore, their All-Conference rankings have not been established yet.

Women’s Tennis – First Team All-Conference: Shayla Landman (Player of the Year also), Sydney Geary, Amanda Jepson, and Alexandra Claherty.

Men’s Cross Country – Garrett Urban and Daniel Spanner.

Women’s Cross Country – Kelsey Oddis.

Golf – First Team: Javon Trout (Player of the Year, and Co-Newcomer of the Year). Third team: Marty Sholtis.

Men’s Soccer – Second Team: Jake Lauderbaugh. Third Team: Brian Koerber.

Women’s Soccer – First Team: Kayleen Schwegler (Newcomer of the Year). Second Team: Courtney Carroll, Caitlin Welsh, Camille Hickman, and Shannon Edwards. Third Team: Brianna Burgunder.

Men’s Basketball – First Team: Rocco Contristano. Second Team: Jerell Figueroa. Third Team: Mike Connelly, and Marcus Thomas. Women’s Basketball – Second Team: Emily Nelson and Kelsey Oddis.

As for team success, the Women’s Soccer team finished in third place overall, which was the highest since 2005, The Women’s Tennis team was the regular season conference champions, and the Men’s Basketball team was the regular season conference champions.

Berich shared his thoughts about the 2015-16 season.

“I wouldn’t say I was surprised by any of the success really, just extremely proud of everything we’ve accomplished. It’s been an incredibly successful year.”
