“What Happened to Monday”
by Samantha Taraboletti
Noomi Rapace stars as Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Karen Settman in the Netflix original movie “What Happened to Monday.”
Confusing? Yes.
The movie is set in the year 2073. Thirty years prior, in 2043, overpopulation caused a worldwide crisis, which resulted in a one child per family policy, which was enforced by the Child Allocation Bureau. Any child born after the eldest is put into “cryosleep.”
A woman named Karen Settman died after giving birth to identical septuplet girls. Their grandfather, Terrence (Willem Dafoe), names them each after a day of the week, but teaches them how to pose as one woman, Karen Settman, named after their mother. They are only allowed out of the house on the day of the week that corresponds to their name. The women keep this up into adulthood, after their grandfather is dead and not there to protect them anymore.
When Monday goes missing, all hell breaks loose. The C.A.B., which is run by Nicolette Cayman (Glenn Close), figured out the secret of the Settman family. Through a series of gruesome events, only two sisters survive, and the world finds out just what “cryosleep” really means.
This movie is not for the faint of heart. There is a lot of violence and a few sex scenes in this movie. If you can get passed the gore, “What Happened to Monday” is a movie that all dystopian lovers will enjoy.
