The Puck Drops for Bobcats Hockey
by Connor Warwick
“I don’t expect to lose more than four or five games. The goal is always to make it to the championship if not win it,” said Captain and defenseman Garrett Woznichak (Senior Accounting Major).
Last season the team, “Made it to playoffs. Which is something we’re always shooting for,” he said.
A big key to this playoff run was their coach, Dave Ulishney. Regarding Ulishney, Woznichak said, “Last year was his first year. He came in after a down year and in his first season he took us back to the playoffs. It was a quick turnaround for the team.” In addition to Woznichak and Ulishney, the team’s other leader is co-captain Dante Youhan. The team only has two players from last season not returning, however, one of them was their leading scorer.
“We have a lot of quality players,” Woznichak said, “But the numbers were pretty short at the beginning of the year. I think we only had 12 players early on but we just added two, possibly three more.”
It will be heavy minutes for some of the players this year given that don’t currently have enough players rostered to fill out three full lines. Some players their captain is watching this season to have a good year are Dakota McIntyre, Jake Miller, and fellow captain Dante Youhan.
However, it’s going to be a team effort. “With the numbers that we have we need everyone to pull their weight,” said Woznichak.
Regarding the NHL fandom, the majority of the team is Penguins fans, “But Berny (Zach Bernstein) is from New Jersey and he’s a Flyers fan.” The lone Flyers fan is also the team’s starting goalie.
The team plays at Center Ice Arena in Delmont. They play upcoming home games on October 20, November 3, and November 4. You can find the full schedule and game times on their team website. Be sure to come out and support your Bobcats.
