Netflix and Thrill
by Connor Warwick
“Ozark” has been one of this year’s biggest TV shows. Although not talked about as much as other Netflix originals such as “Making a Murderer” or “House of Cards,” it is still getting a lot of critical acclaim.
This thriller follows Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) and his family’s experience living in the lake region of the Missouri Ozarks. Marty must relocate his family to the Ozarks when his dealings with a drug cartel go wrong. Throughout the show, Marty is trying to come up with money making schemes. He uses his wit and charm to win people over for his own gain.
Currently rated as the sixth most popular show on IMDB, “Ozark” is carried by a strong performance by Jason Bateman who plays the role of husband, father, and drug cartel associate. His shy yet intimidating demeanor pulls you in right from the beginning. It’s a very different role for him. Bateman typically plays likeable characters such as Michael Bluth in “Arrested Development.” However, he absolutely kills it in this more diverse role. He should receive Emmy consideration.
If you are a fan of happy, upbeat television, then this isn’t for you. Ozark has a dark and eerie mood throughout the entire 10-episode season. There are constant unexpected twists and every character has an interesting story arc. It combines the plot and character development of “Breaking Bad” with the mood of “Mr. Robot.” You should watch the thriller on Netflix as soon as possible.
