On Monday, March 16, Los Angeles authorities arrested 71-year-old billionaire Robert Durst for the murder of Susan Berman, who was shot execution style on Christmas Eve in 2000.
This is a timeline of Durst’s movements since that night.
December 24 2000: Berman was found dead at her home, shot in the back of the head.
January 2001: Durst flees to Texas
October 2001: Durst is arrested for the murder and dismemberment of Morris Black.
2004: Durst is released from jail, found not guilty, ruled self-defense.
2010: Durst pitches his idea for a documentary of his life.
March 8 2015: The fifth episode of “Jinx” airs on HBO.
March 16 2015: Robert Durst is arrested in New Orleans.
Berman was preparing to be interviewed by police about the disappearance of Kathleen Durst when she was found dead. Within days, Los Angeles police received a letter believed to be from the killer with Berman’s address, referred to as the “Cadaver Letter”.
In 2010, Durst contacted director Andrew Jarecki and pitched an idea for a reality show following Durst’s life. They offered the series to HBO who picked up “Jinx: The life and deaths of Robert Durst”, a six part series.
On the fifth episode, an envelope was revealed to Durst that he had written to Berman. The handwriting was seemingly identical to the “Cadaver Letter”, with the same misspelled “BEVERLEY HILLS” in the address. They asked him on camera which handwriting was his and he could not tell them.
After seeing this, Durst had trouble conducting himself on camera, and then he went to the restroom and began speaking to himself.
Durst said, “There it is, you’re caught.” “What the hell did I do?” and “Killed them all, of course.” This took place in April of 2012 according to Jarecki, which leads many to question why he would not have given this to the police right away. Unfortunately for those people, Jarecki has declined any further comment on the case.
After the fifth episode of “Jinx” aired, the LAPD put out a warrant for Durst. Durst was found a week later in New Orleans with what appeared to be supplies to leave the country.
Durst was officially charged on March 17 with the murder and, if he is found guilty, could face the death penalty.
