Students Host a Know Your Rights Training Today at 4 p.m.
On Wednesday, Feb. 25, the Students for a Democratic Society club will be hosting a “Know Your Rights” training at 4 p.m. in the Chapel.
Marris Sobotka, President of Students for a Democratic Society, shares the goal behind the event.
“I think a lot of students want to do something about ICE presence in their communities, but without the tools and training, it’s kind of hard to do anything about it,” Sobotka says, “So the goal is to make sure students know what they can and can’t do when it comes to dealing with ICE officers.”
Trenton Wood, Treasurer of the club, says knowing how to civilly observe is a very important skill to have when it comes to ICE.
“It’s about making sure people know their rights, know how to observe any instances of ICE activity, to civilly watch,” says Wood, “the power of observation, eyes and cameras are some of the most important things when it comes to protecting individual rights.”
The club encourages students to attend this training to better prepare themselves in the event that they come into contact with an ICE agent.
“Not everyone knows their rights when it comes to police, even less when it comes to border patrol and ICE,” says Wood. “While they are law enforcement, they are a very particular kind of law enforcement. Knowing what you can and should say no to is very important.”
