Vaccines have been a highly debated topic for years, but the conversation has grown even more tense with Florida removing all vaccine mandates last month. Governor Ron DeSantis, in a rather controversial move, banned all state-run vaccine mandates on Sept. 3, 2025.

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), founded in 1980, said that Florida’s removal of vaccine mandates puts children at higher risk for preventable diseases such as measles, mumps, whooping cough, and chickenpox.

DeSantis’ decision to remove these mandates directly affects the most vulnerable people of our society.

Here at Pitt-Greensburg, just like everywhere else, we may interact with individuals with weakened or compromised immune systems. To promote a safe environment for all, students and faculty are highly encouraged to receive the flu shot.

The flu shot is offered at different times at all campuses. Besides being a responsible decision for the overall health of our campus, it also serves as a learning experience for our nursing students.

Even if you miss these clinics, you can still receive the shot from different locations such as Falk Pharmacy or even Walmart.

Falk Pharmacy, located at 3601 Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh, offers the flu shot to Pitt students and faculty.

If you miss one of the clinics or need an off-site option, you can receive the shot at no cost by presenting your UPMC Health Plan insurance card. Students can also schedule an appointment with Student Health Services.
