The annual Race for Grace 5K event took place on April 5, with activities starting at 7 a.m. and the race beginning at 9 a.m. The event featured breakfast with concession stands, children’s activities, charitable hair donations, dance performances, and basket and raffle auctions.

Despite the rain throughout the morning, April 5 was a beautiful day to commemorate the life of Grace. The weather served as a reminder that there are rainbows after the storm, as the community gathered to participate in the event.

Held at Norwin High School, the event supports The Reflections of Grace Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on helping children and families affected by pediatric brain cancer.

The foundation was established in December 2008 to honor Grace Elizabeth Ekis, who passed away at a young age. Her parents, Tamara and Brian Ekis, created the organization to channel their grief into a mission that helps others.

The foundation’s name reflects the love and beauty Grace shared during her short but meaningful life.

The Reflections of Grace Foundation provides financial, emotional, and educational support to families affected by pediatric brain cancer, raises awareness about pediatric brain tumors, and funds research for cures, including for diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). All proceeds from the event go toward donations.

Participating in events like these fosters a sense of unity and connects individuals to something inspirational and powerful. As an avid participant, I encourage others to get involved with their community.

Yukon Ebbitt, a runner in the 5K, shared his thoughts on running for a cause.

“Participating in charity event races is crucial for raising awareness about important issues, like brain cancer in children. It’s important to be part of events like these to support research and hope for a cure so no parent has to worry about their child’s diagnosis,” he said.

As the runners crossed the finish line, the end of the race symbolized not only the completion of a challenge but also a celebration of hope, grace, and the human spirit.

A warm golden hue cast over the participants as the rain stopped, and their faces reflected a mix of exhaustion, determination, and, most importantly, a sense of accomplishment.

Together, Reflections of Grace continues to make a difference, one stride at a time. For more information, visit reflectionsofgrace.org.
