Dave Newman, assistant professor of Creative and Professional Writing, and Lori Jakiela, professor of English and Creative Writing, will be taking leaves of absence starting fall 2025.

The pair announced last week they will be taking their leaves in order to fulfill their dream of sharing their duo comedy special “Writers with Witticism” with the world. Several staff members, as well as students, were left confused by this sudden decision and, what seems like, a new interest in comedy.

“It’s been our dream for a while, but it’s not something we typically talk about,” Newman says.

They may not discuss it with others, but Jakiela points out that this decision has been in the works for a while.

“Newman and I sat down and planned everything out over a year ago. We finally decided to embark on this journey,” she says.

“Writers with Witticism” is a comedy special where the two take turns discussing the best jokes to include in written work. In addition, they perform a comedy act where they say the majority of their inspiration comes from the classroom. The two seem excited for this new adventure.

“It’s going to be a great time. We’re leaving the kids at home, but our dog will be joining us on tour,” Newman says.

Their tour is set to start in early August and go until January. The writing department is nervous about losing two of their professors for the fall semester, but Jakiela and Newman are excited for students and staff to witness this hidden talent of theirs.

Jakiela says that comedy is different from writing, but some similarities remain for her.

“There’s some similarities that we take from writing and put towards our comedy. For one, no cliches will be used in our jokes,” she says.

The Outsider wishes the best of luck to these aspiring comedians and encourages students and staff to look out for their comedy special, coming fall 2025.
