The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg shared an important announcement this week. All residential halls around the campus are being demolished and instead being replaced with tents. These tents and camps around campus will become the new residential options.

These options have been given in hopes of causing the students to become closer to nature and learn the fun of camping and outdoor activities. This has been a staple already with clubs like Outdoor Activity Community Service (OACS), but now it is becoming a requirement to live on campus.

“This is not only a great way to get students to develop the survival skills necessary to succeed in their future careers,” says Pitt-Greensburg President Bob Bobberson. “It’s also a way for the university to save money. And tent cities are the wave of the future, so we’re on the cutting edge here.”

While President Bobberson is excited about the change, some students, like Rodney Greg, a freshman geography major, are concerned.

“What about rabid raccoons? What about bears?” Greg asks. “I’m worried for our safety. There are bobcats here.”

Bruiser, the campus mascot, says bobcats aren’t the problem. “These kids are just out of touch with nature. They play too many video games. It will be good for them to get outside and see how real animals live.”

With these new campsites being set up, not only will every student get a tent but also be given supplies such as grills to support their endeavors and still give them the option to make their own food.

The campsites will be set up by the fall 2025 semester, giving incoming freshmen and current students alike a new and unique experience at Pitt-Greensburg.

The Outsider will continue to report on the changes to campus as we switch from regular dormitories to these new so-called “camp dorms.”
