Do you love memes?
Starting in the fall of 2025, Pitt-Greensburg will offer a new four-year bachelor’s degree program in Meme Studies, making it the first university to provide students with the opportunity to pursue a career in this field.
The degree will prepare students for careers in digital marketing, content creation, and more. By developing skills in meme culture, social media strategy, and audience analysis, students will be ready to enter the workforce with expertise in the rapidly growing digital content space.
The program will cover topics like meme culture, content creation, social media strategy, and the use of meme-based campaigns. It aims to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving digital media landscape.
Students with artistic or digital creation skills could benefit from pursuing this degree as a standalone major or combining it with another major for added career leverage.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the Meme Studies program will provide students with a unique skill set to help them engage with and contribute to this increasingly relevant cultural phenomenon.
Nico Van Loan, a senior at Pitt-Greensburg, believes the new degree could be valuable.
“If implemented, meme studies could be beneficial for Pitt-Greensburg and its students by helping them engage with and analyze the evolving digital communication landscape. The focus on popular digital culture can shape media literacy and enhance areas like communications, political science, and literary studies,” he said.
The university plans to hire qualified faculty to lead the program and ensure students receive instruction from experienced professionals in the field. Students will also have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through internships with companies and local businesses.
In the coming months, the university will develop a course sequence map and distribution of credits for the program, as well as feature the program on their website to attract prospective students.
With the digital world continuing to expand, this new program at Pitt-Greensburg offers an innovative way for students to develop a skill set that is increasingly in demand.
