St. Patrick’s Day Parade Dash Unites Pittsburgh Through Fun and Fitness
by Abby Morrow
On Saturday, March 15, Pittsburgh held the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade dash, presented by GNC and UPMC. This fun-filled, spirited event included a 5k run, and one-mile walk, open to all who paid the $50 fee to participate.
All volunteers were welcome to help out with passing out running bibs, handing medals out, and providing water along the course.
The one-mile walk began at 8 a.m.; and the 5k quickly followed at 8:25 a.m. The race began and concluded at the scenic street on Boulevard of the Allies. Both runners and walkers set off at the sound of the gun with cheers of encouragement, signs, and music. Onlookers were eager to set up chairs and partake in a day filled with community, health, and fun.
As participants in green attire and themed accessories flooded the streets, the festive spirit filled the air, uniting residents with a community bond and a way to celebrate cultural heritage.
The 5k also served as an outlet for athletes to compete and beat PR’s. Months of preparation can be spent on training . I have been participating in this race for several years and use it as a way to test my limits while running; as well as be involved with the community.
After crossing the finish line, participants were awarded with a St. Patrick’s themed metal and sweatshirt, providing a way to remember the experience. Concession stands lined the finish with snacks, fruit, and a lot of water.
The parade dash has molded into a tradition with months of preparation for both the partners of the event and the participants. By taking part in this, members had the opportunity to show up for a greater cause. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to UPMC, to focus on cancer support and research.
From my own experience, I find value in participating in events like these that work towards a common goal of building community and reaching a goal for a cause that makes a difference.
As runners and walkers packed up their gear and headed home for the day, it was evident that excitement lingered for following celebrations surrounding St. Patrick’s Day.
With the success of the 2025 dash, organizers will continue to keep this event annual, as a way to spread joy and spirit across the streets of Pittsburgh. Events like these can be a platform to continue to unify the community and spread cheer.
