Valentine’s Day is often marketed as a celebration of love, but it might just be a celebration of capitalism.
According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are estimated to spend $27.5 billion on Valentine’s Day.
Candy, flowers, cards, dinners, and jewelry seem like essential purchases to have a good Valentine’s Day—but why is that?
In a world that’s increasingly materialistic, even a holiday about true love can’t escape the pressure of consumerism.
So how can you have a great Valentine’s Day without falling into the trap of materialism?
- Handwritten notes: Writing a heartfelt note is a great way to express your feelings and show effort. Taking the time to write something personal shows your love in a meaningful way.
- Homemade candlelit dinner: Cooking dinner for your loved one not only shows that you care, but also that you’re willing to put in time and effort. Bonus points if you create a menu in advance and let them choose what they’d like.
- Watch the sunset: If the weather’s right, watching the sunset is a romantic (and free) way to connect. A walk in nature beforehand and stargazing afterward can make the experience even more special.
- Make a handmade gift: Handmade gifts may not match the quality of store-bought items, but they carry far more sentimental value. Even if you’re not the crafty type, you could make a photo album or decorate a keepsake box.
- Watch a movie: Pop some popcorn, get cozy, and watch your partner’s favorite movie—or one they’ve been wanting to see. If you have pets, invite them to join in, too.
- Handpick flowers: Instead of buying an overpriced bouquet, find wildflowers and create your own arrangement. It might not be as polished as one from a store, but the personal touch makes it far more meaningful.
If you’re planning to go to dinner or buy a box of chocolates and flowers, don’t feel bad. That’s what’s expected in today’s world. But keep these ideas in mind the next time you want to show someone you care without spending all of your money.
