This month, the Pitt-Greensburg Student Government Association (SGA) will be holding its annual senatorial election activities beginning the week of Feb. 17. Voting will occur during the week of Feb. 24.
For both current and new senators, the deadline for candidate applications is Friday, Feb. 14. Only two qualifications are required for the position:
“Membership in the Student Senate is open to all Pitt-Greensburg students upon establishing and maintaining a quality point average of over 2.25. They must also not have any current judicial holds,” SGA Advisor Al Thiel said.
SGA Vice-President Zakery Wiles explained that SGA is always eager to encourage new students to join them, provided that they fulfill all of the requirements. According to him, recruiting new senators is particularly important this semester since quite a few of SGA’s current executive members will be graduating next school year.
“We are always trying to improve our size to make sure we get senators from different backgrounds, dorms, majors, etc. We are also preparing for five of our executive members to graduate next year, and we want the senate to be set for when that happens,” he said.
SGA will kick off the election period with a candidates’ debate at Campana Chapel. The debate was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19. However, according to Student Government Vice President Zakery Wiles, setbacks have forced SGA to move it to another date.
“Unfortunately, due to scheduling reasons, we had to move the debate to a different time that hasn’t been worked out yet. It will be happening sometime during campaigning week,” he said.
In addition to the live debate, SGA is having a “Meet the Candidates” event at the chapel as well, according to SGA Advisor Al Thiel.
“They are still working to finalize when the debate and meet the candidates is occurring, but those events do occur together,” Thiel said.
After the debate is over, elections for the candidates will be held during the last week of February.
“The link will be sent out to students through their Pitt email and [the results] will be announced upon our return from spring break,” Wiles said.
