“Well, what are you going to do with that?”

It’s the most common thing I hear when I tell people that I’m a writing major. Does it hurt my feelings? Everytime. I wonder why people feel this way towards writing and why it’s looked down upon as a college degree. But, as people are depending more on AI to do the writing for them, it seems that we are beginning to not have a place in the world anymore.

Does that make me nervous? Absolutely. I wish people were more open to the idea of how important writing is. Your favorite tv show or movie starts with a script. News about something you might care about is because of journalistic writing. Your favorite slogan that you can’t get out of your head comes from, you guessed it, writing. The list goes on and on. But, no matter how much I defend writing, I feel my point will never get through because of today’s technology.

Sure, AI can provide ideas or just write everything for you. But, are they as creative as what human writers can provide? Will all writing begin to sound so generated? If humans start depending on AI, I believe that we all are going to become the same people with the same ideas. There will be no creativity left. Then, we really will become the people in “Wall-E.” How sad that would be.

That’s why I love writing. Within my major, there is so much creative talent that is brought to the table. People can take simple ideas and create them into something that leaves me wanting to read more. It inspires my own writing and makes me enjoy what I do more than when I started my college career.

I am a firm believer that creativity will overrule anything and it should be appreciated more when it comes to talking about writing and humans can create anything better than AI could. Writing will always matter.
