Nominations Open for Student Leadership Awards: Recognizing Excellence and Leadership on Campus

Do you know someone on campus who you think is a great student leader? If so, then you should nominate them for one of the student leadership awards. The awards are for students and groups who demonstrate excellence and leadership daily. These are 12 awards people can be nominated for along with a member of the year recognition for all clubs that submit. Submissions for individual and group awards are due by Friday, March 22, at 5 p.m. Members of the Year submissions are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 29. The ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 2, at 7 p.m. in the Campana Chapel.

Al Thiel, the director of the Student Center and Student Involvement, and who does the primary work for these awards, said,  “The current version of the leadership awards began in 2010. There has been a form of leadership recognition for clubs and organizations since at least 2002, though.”  

Thiel further described the process by which candidates are picked for the awards. 

“Recipients are chosen from nominations submitted by students, faculty, and staff. We have a small committee in Student Life and Success to review the process and applications each year, and the award submissions are shared with each member of the committee for their feedback and input. If there were no submissions for an award, the committee members make recommendations. I remain a neutral party in this process to coordinate the process,” Thiel said.

Dr. Haylee Hayden, the assistant director of Student Involvement and Orientation, and who helps look at the submissions, said, “I believe the awards are important to recognize the students and clubs for their extraordinary efforts to make campus inviting and inclusive. I believe it gives the students a sense of accomplishment and the recognition they deserve.”
