The life of an average college student can be very intense and stressful. Especially in terms of the lives of upperclassmen, the copious amounts of deadlines and expectations can easily make one flustered. However, if you are looking for a light-hearted activity to provide alleviation from such things, joining Cinema Club may just be the right choice.
The club’s prospects promise to provide a great deal of fun for students. A variety of interesting events and film showings will be hosted by the club on and off campus grounds. The official club faculty advisor and adjunct art instructor, Kenneth Nicholson, confirms he will be actively involved with these events.
“I am excited to go to the on-campus screenings they have and also take trips to local theaters,” Nicholson says.
As far as his own plans for the club are concerned, Nicholson says that he would love to find a way to visit the independent theaters in the general Pittsburgh area. He also wishes to schedule visits to any places which are dedicated to cinema history.
“The Carnegie Museum of Art has some really great resources for learning about film history, so I’d like to do something like that,” Nicholson says.
Some students may recall that Cinema Club has functioned in much the same way in the past. However, until the first semester of 2024, it was known as “Film Club.” Brennen Marsh, the club president, explains that the alterations made to the club were largely due to a feeling of dissatisfaction on his part.
“I wasn’t exactly proud of what it was when I first started, but I am now,” Marsh says. “The title change from Film Club to Cinema Club was cosmetic more than anything else.”
However, the more fundamental changes were because of deficiencies with the previous version of the club. He says that the previous administrators of the club never gave them any social media passwords or email blockchain lists, so they had to redo the club so they could access those things.
Marsh has been with the club during the entirety of his career at Pitt-Greensburg. He filled the position of club treasurer as a freshman and became the vice president during his sophomore year. Now that he is the president, Marsh hopes to take the club in new and interesting directions which appeal to wider spectrums of people.
For those who may be interested in Cinema Club, Marsh says that the best way to join is by attending meetings. He clarified that club meetings will mostly happen off-campus.
“We’ll have our meetings when we go see movies in theaters, but we’ve been shifting away from regular meetings on campus since those had a fairly low attendance rate,” Marsh says.
Reaching out to Professor Nicholson is a definite option as well, as he says that his main goal for the club is to provide service to any student who may need it.
“I can always be there when they need me and I really just hope to offer guidance,” Nicholson says.
