Would you happen to be a writer looking for somewhere to publish your work? Look no further than the campus of Pitt-Greensburg, as the newest edition of our semesterly chapbook, Pendulum, is coming soon.

Now exclusively associated with the campus’ writing club, Pendulum was formerly its own individual entity before the pandemic. Katheryn Parker, the club president, confirmed this.

“It can be really difficult to pull in enthusiastic and reliable people for clubs because involvement has been at an all-time low,” Parker said.

The situation with the writing club is no different, as the writing community on campus has seen a decline over the past few years. It is still very much present, however, for the chapbook’s editor-in-chief, Caitlin Cruser, commented on the fact that every issue of Pendulum that she has worked on so far has been fairly sizable.

“The writing community on campus isn’t what it once was, resulting in less submissions, but when we do publish it, we get a good sized book,” Cruser said.

The importance of Pendulum is not to be understated in this regard. While it provides an easily accessible platform for new writers to publish their work, it also provides a unique perspective on how students view each other.

“I think it is so rare these days to have a space that is exclusively dedicated to the art of feeling. I think everyone should be excited to read and view their peers in that way,” Cruser said.

While the main focus of the entries for Pendulum are poetry, Cruser and the publishing team also readily accept stories and digital art pieces–the limit being no more than three poems, one prose piece, and a maximum of three art or photography pieces per entrant. The time frame for submissions is also fairly short, as Cruser explained that Pendulum is only published once a year.

“Since I’ve taken over, I have published it in the spring semester only,” Cruser said.

The deadline for this year’s submissions is Feb. 14, so be sure to email Cruser soon if you are thinking about entering something yourself.
