Halloween is only a month and a half away, which means the movie industry has already started releasing movies to fit the reason for the season. There are several new horror movies coming to theaters soon – whether a sequel of a beloved franchise or a new original story– so we’re sure to be in for a fright. So, grab your choice of beverage and a big bowl of popcorn and get ready for this year’s wild Halloween horror lineup.
We start out with “The Nun II,” which will have already been released by the time this is published. Taissa Farmiga will be resuming her role as Sister Irene in what will be the second movie in “The Nun” series and the ninth in “The Conjuring” movie universe overall. Taking place in France in 1956, a priest is murdered and it seems as though evil starts spreading, so Sister Irene must come face to face with a demonic force she knows all too well.
After that on Sept. 15, “A Haunting In Venice” will have been released. This stars Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot, who will be returning for this third film in the series, based on the original writings by Agatha Christie. In this one, the Belgian sleuth will have to investigate a murder while attending a seance during Halloween at a haunted house in Venice, Italy.
“It Lives Inside” releases on Sept. 22. Starring Megan Suri as Samidha, this movie is technically the only original solo movie on this list. Samidha is desperate to fit in at school, so she rejects her East Indian culture in order to fit in, but when a spirit latches onto her best friend, she must come to terms with her heritage in order to defeat it.
Then, my most anticipated on this list and the newest addition to one of my favorite horror movie series and one of my favorite movie series overall, “Saw X,” releases on Sept. 29. Tobin Bell will be returning as John Kramer in this prequel story that will make this the tenth movie in the series. This will tell the story of Kramer attempting to find a miraculous cure for his cancer, only to get scammed and bent on getting revenge on these con artists.
Once that is released, “The Exorcist: Believer” comes out on Oct. 6. This is the sixth movie in the Exorcist movie series and has Ellen Burstyn returning as her character, Chris MacNeil. A single father must seek the help of MacNeil after his daughter and his daughter’s best friends are seemingly possessed, as MacNeil seems to be the only person alive having witnessed this before.
Last, but certainly not least, “Five Nights At Freddy’s” releases on Oct. 27. This movie is a close second on my list as it is the result of almost a decade’s worth of video games and books, beloved by me and many others, that pack as much hidden lore as they do jumpscares. Josh Hutcherson will be starring as a security guard who starts working at a pizzeria, but quickly realizes all is not as it seems.
With a new horror movie coming out almost every single week, your weekends will certainly not be boring if you’re a horror movie fanatic. Grab your friend, your roommate, your professor, whoever and head on down to your local movie theater. The AMC next to the Westmoreland Mall is the closest one to campus as it is only three miles away.
