Remembering Dr. Mark T. Stauffer

Dr. Mark T. Stauffer, a beloved associate professor of chemistry at Pitt-Greensburg, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 3.

Dr. Stauffer began teaching at Pitt-Greensburg in 2001 and worked on campus for nearly twenty years. He was a passionate, brilliant instructor who was dedicated to his students’ success.

Dr. Stauffer was a mentor to many students and was cherished by his colleagues. He will be deeply missed by the entire campus community.

Dr. Stauffer received many accolades and accomplishments throughout his career. He earned his bachelor’s degree and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, working at Shippensburg University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Ethyl Corporation in Baton Rouge, and the Carnegie Melon University Outreach Program before teaching at Pitt-Greensburg.

Dr. Stauffer was published in the Astronomy Magazine in Pittsburgh and worked actively with the Sewickley Creek Watershed Project, Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh, Pittcon, and the International Forum on Process Analytical Chemistry (IFPAC). He was also working on several chemistry textbooks.

Dr. Stauffer will be sorely missed not only for his great intelligence and expertise but also for his dedication, kindness, and compassion. He was an outstanding instructor and well-loved member of the community.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brother-in-laws, Paul Joseph Loades and Frank Tamburlin; and his treasured pet cat, Hershey. He is survived by his wife, Resa; his four sisters, Shirley Lodes, Grace Tamburlin, Mary Ann Maholtz, and Judy Stebich; many nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews; and many great-great nieces and nephews.

The Pitt-Greensburg community will be praying for Dr. Stauffer’s family as they grieve.
